College 101
College 101 I am on Oxford Academyâs Speech and Debate Team, in both the Parliamentary Debate division and the Lincoln-Douglass debate division. I write screenplays, short stories, and opinionated blogs and am a regular contributor to my school literary magazine, The Gluestick. I have accumulated over 300 community service hours that includes work at homeless shelters, libraries, and special education youth camps. My teachers didnât quite know what to do with me, so, no longer confined to a classroom if I didnât want to be, I was in limbo. I began wandering around campus with no company except my thoughts. My desire to major in biology in college has been stimulated by my fascination with the human body, its processes, and the desire to find a way to help people with allergies. I hope that one day I can find a way to stop allergic reactions or at least lessen the symptoms, so that children and adults donât have to feel the same fear and bitterness that I felt. I want to study foreign language and linguistics in college because, in short, it is something that I know I will use and develop for the rest of my life. I will never stop traveling, so attaining fluency in foreign languages will only benefit me. In the future, I hope to use these skills as the foundation of my work, whether it is in international business, foreign diplomacy, or translation. Occasionally, Zora, my English teacherâs dog, would tag along and weâd walk for miles in each other's silent company. Other times, I found myself pruning the orchard, feeding the schoolâs wood furnaces, or my new favorite activity, splitting wood. Then, in high school, I developed an enthusiasm for Chinese. As I studied Chinese at my school, I marveled how if just one stroke was missing from a character, the meaning is lost. I loved how long words were formed by combining simpler characters, so HuÇ' (ç«) meaning fire and ShÄn (å±±) meaning mountain can be joined to create HuÇ'shÄn (ç«å±±), which means volcano. I love spending hours at a time practicing the characters and I can feel the beauty and rhythm as I form them. After I finished the exchange student program, I had the option of returning to Korea but I decided to stay in America. I wanted to see new places and meet different people. â My adjective-a-day keeps people listening, gives me conversation starters with faculty, and solicits fun suggestions from my friends. 25 therapy sessions, over 40 poems, not a single one didnât mention my mom. I shared my writing at open mics, with friends, and I cried every time. I wanted to find a solution so that nobody would have to feel the way I did; nobody deserved to feel that pain, fear, and resentment. As I learned more about the medical world, I became more fascinated with the bodyâs immune responses, specifically, how a body reacts to allergens. This past summer, I took a month-long course on human immunology at Stanford University. I learned about the different mechanisms and cells that our bodies use in order to fight off pathogens. I embraced the pain, the hurt, and eventually, it became the norm. That night, the glow-in-the-dark ball skittered across the ice. My opponent and I, brooms in hand, charged forward. We collided and I banana-peeled, my head taking the brunt of the impact. Stubborn as I was, even with a concussion, I wanted to remain in class and do everything my peers did, but my healing brain protested. Since I wasnât an exchange student anymore, I had the freedom--and burden--of finding a new school and host family on my own. After a few days of thorough investigation, I found the Struiksma family in California. In the years that followed, this experience and my regular visits to my allergy specialist inspired me to become an allergy specialist. Even though I was probably only ten at the time, I wanted to find a way to help kids like me. Throughout those days, I created a new-found sense of home in my head. He doesnât tell us what they mean until the end of the essay, when he writes âI learned and was shaped by each of them.â Note that each essence image is actually a lesson--something he learned from each family.

Is It Okay For Parents To Help Edit Their Childs College Essay?
Is It Okay For Parents To Help Edit Their Child's College Essay? The sad truth is that most college application essays are not very good. When I say they are ânot very goodâ, I mean they are either boring, impenetrable, melodramatic, or all of the above. You might think youâve read or heard the perfect opening someplace elseâ"a book of sample essays, a speech, a line in your favorite movie, etc. But pirating someone elseâs writing is plagiarism, and every college I can think of would frown on an applicant who steals other peopleâs work without crediting the source. There are, however, different ways to write college essays that can increase your chance for an admission offer and things you can do that may hurt your chances. The College Essay Timeline
The College Essay Timeline But, if they start writing the essay know that the college may very well determine that the work was not yours. Is your parent going to write your essays that are assigned by professors while you are in college? You still need to present a well-written and carefully-considered essay, of course. If you know writing is somewhat of a weakness, have teachers, guidance counselors, friends, and family members read it and offer feedback. However, colleges will generally understand that your talents lie elsewhere. They should seek guidance from their counselors or teachers for this. The essay should be in the studentâs voice and parentâs are not always the best advisors for this part of the application. The college is learning about you from what you write. Not what anyone else writes including your parent. No matter how qualified you are, you can kill your chances with a bad essay. On the other hand, if you are minimally qualified or even if something fall bellows the minimum, like your test scores, the essay can be your chance for redemption. My daughter is trying to get in as an out of state student to University of North Carolina and University of Michigan as her top 2 choices. She scored a 33 on ACT with a 6 writing, which she took because Michigan said it was required. She clearly wasnât prepared for the writing section, so she just took it again and scored a bit lower on her composite but the same on the essay. However, you should still aim to write a strong essay, especially if your dream colleges are highly-selective. Still not convinced that your essays are important? Skipping the essay can leave a student scrambling to fit in an additional test date should his or her college plans change. Some colleges requiring the essay will not superscore test dates without the essay. Just as important, itâs uncommon for an ACT or SAT essay to be a significant negative factor on an application. With a minimum amount of practice, most students can reach the 25thâ"75th percentile score ranges of even the most elite colleges in the country. In other words, there is more upside than downside when looking at an extended test day. In the college essay, you need to contextualize your examples for the reader. Then we went to a college fair and spoke to a Michigan Admissions Officer who said Michigan has decided NOT to require writing. She wants to apply to both as Early Action, but doesnât have time to retake ACT without writing for that deadline. Do you think reporting her 33 ACT with the poor writing score will hurt her at UNC or Michigan, even though they say it is not required, and UNC says it is discouraged? OR should we send her 1450 SAT without a writing score? Letâs look deeper into the four main reasons that colleges require essays as part of the application process to see why theyâre worth your time and attention. Rest assured that admissions officers do, in fact, read your essays. Also, admissions officers view them as an important part of your application. The college cares how you write not how your parent writes unless they are also applying to the same college as you. Join thousands of students and parents getting exclusive high school, test prep, and college admissions information. As much as I rail against the essay, I still recommend that students take it â" at least once. Your daughter didnât waste her time, she created some options. Policies on viewing essay results are all over the place at essay optional schools. Many admission officers would view it as a âplus factor.â Itâs wonderful that your daughter did so well. Despite the decline in colleges requiring an SAT or ACT essay, Compass still advises many of our students to make the essay a part of their testing plans.

I caught that 10-inch fryling five years ago on Fall Creek using a $5 fly rod given to me by my neighbor Gil. The creek is spectacular as it cascades down the 150-foot drop of Ithaca Falls. Only 100-feet further, however, it runs past a decrepit gun factory and underneath a graffitied bridge before flowing adjacent to my high school and out to Cayuga Lake. Aside from the falls, the creek is largely overlooked. The UCs rarely change the prompts and even if they did change them, the changes would probably be announced by now. Just like it says, some students are still not satisfied by what theyâve come up with, but think theyâre really close to finding the right topic.

How To Cite An Essay Online In Mla If you didnât get your drafts to them in due time to give feedback, donât get upset if they tell you that they wonât sacrifice their vacation to help you. Like I mentioned before, continue to look for opportunities to reuse drafts for other schools. You should be reaching critical mass around this time of having an essay draft for just about any prompt that a school will give you. But the personal essay, doesnât have to be that terrifying a beast if your student holds the keys to writing one that will stand out from all of the rest. There is not a time I play my clarinet or guitar, step up to a microphone to sing, or take a bow after a performance that I do not wonder what my donor would think of me. I am still searching for a connection to him through performing and music. I am thankful his personal essay swayed my mother to choose him as my donor, and that his writing compelled me to discover and pursue all of my passions in the classroom and on the stage. The Kidâs Book of Fishing was replaced by Norman MacLeanâs A River Runs Through It. Soon Ernest Hemingwayâs essays found their place next to Trout Unlimited magazines by my bed. But that doesnât mean that setting goals and putting pressure on yourself early on isnât going to help you get the ball rolling. Trust me, a little work now will go a long way towards boosting your confidence and overall preparedness throughout this process. If youâre getting any help from counselors or teachers for editing your essays, keep in mind that many of them will stop checking their emails once Christmas break starts. Make sure to get things into them ahead of time and be respectful of their time. Great essays ideas are oftentimes thrown away because the first version of an essay was executed poorly and readers are unable to even comprehend the message behind it. Before asking others to give feedback, really try to finalize the essay to the best of your ability. Although you donât have to make final decisions for your college list yet, you want to have a number of schools that youâre stoked to apply to and will stay on your college list. Sure, any student can list achievements, but thatâs not what the admissions gurus are looking for in an essay. Most colleges and universities look for five traits in a student essay. Nearly all of the high school students I know who cross that bridge daily do so with no thought of the creek below. Also, I know that procrastination and writing fatigue are real obstacles in this process. You guys arenât essay robots able to churn out quality drafts on a strict schedule. This timeline wasnât meant to be followed exactly. Youâll just have to adjust word counts or the focus of the learning point a little bit. If youâre really hesitant to work on essays because official updated prompts for your schools havenât come out yet, then working on the UC essays can be a safe alternative. Remember, your main essay is the only essay that you put THIS much work into because of how important it is. In order to give an essay a proper chance in the editing process, it needs to be crafted to the vision that you have for it. Things To Include In Your College Application Essay
Things To Include In Your College Application Essay This fall I will embark on writing an additional honors thesis in political science. While the precise topic of my thesis is undecided, I am particularly interested in Mexico and its development towards a more democratic government. I am developing self-awareness, but I still have so much to learn. I want to travel to actual countries and take pictures on a bunch of disposable cameras because there is something magic about those blurry images that develop in the dark. I want to scale real mountains, close my eyes and sit cross-legged on their tops while the whole world around me spins wildly into the future. At some point in everyoneâs life, a promise stops being forever. But no matter how many times a promise is broken, Iâve always wanted to believe that someone will keep one to me. This student may have an entrepreneurial spirit, starting a business, new organization, or event at school like a slam poetry night or an IT group. Maybe your student is fascinated with a topic, talks endlessly about it, and has a solution to a problem that he/she wants to achieve while in college like a public transportation problem. For example, a studentâs story could even focus on athletics, which isnât usually a recommended essay topic unless an athlete went through transformation. Is there a time when a student has struggled, only to reboot, conquer, and win the situation? As the sole undergraduate in the course and only college algebra under my belt, I felt quite intimidated. Yet, the rigors of the class compelled me to expand my thinking and learn to overcome any insecurities and deficits in my education. The effort paid off as I earned not only an âAâ in the course, but also won the T.O.P.S. award in statistics. This award is given to the top undergraduate student with a demonstrated history of success in statistics. Through the combination of a genuine appreciation and knack for statistics and with his encouragement, I proceeded to take his advanced statistics class as well as the first graduate level statistics course at OU. I continued my statistical training by completing the second graduate statistics course on model comparisons with Dr. Roger Johnson, a Professor in the Psychology Department. The model comparison course was not only the most challenging course I have taken as an undergraduate, but the most important. Professor Mitchell obtained a grant to take a class of students to Belgium in order to study the EU. This course revealed a direct correlation between what I had studied in the classroom with the real world. After spending several weeks studying the EU, its history and present movement towards integration, the class flew to Brussels where we met with officials and proceeded to learn firsthand how the EU functioned. Due to the increased deployment schedule and demands placed on all branches of the military after September 11, my attendance in school has necessarily come second to my commitment to the military. There are various semesters where, due to this demand, I attended school less than full time. Despite taking a long time and the difficulty in carving separate time for school with such occupational requirements, I remained persistent aiming towards attending school as my schedule would allow. My military commitment ends this July and will no longer complicate my academic pursuits. I come from a small, economically depressed town in Northern Wisconson. Minoring in Spanish, I have read various pieces of literature from Mexico and have come to respect Mexico and Latin American culture and society. I look forward to conducting this research as it will have a more qualitative tilt than my thesis in psychology, therefore granting an additional understanding of research methodology. As an undergraduate, I was privileged to gain extensive research experience working in a research lab with Dr. Carol. Participating in such a large study from start to finish has validated my interest in academic research as a profession. In order to pay for school and continue being active in the community, I enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard as a Medic. Thanks to that first morning on Fall Creek, Iâve found a calling that consumes my free time, compels me to teach fly fishing to others, and drives what I want to study in college. Our vision is to be the company that best recognizes and serves the needs of international students around the world. Additionally, my attendance would allow the Political Science department to make a more accurate determination on how well I would fit in to the program than from solely my graduate school application. My interest in attending the University of Rochester in particular, relates to my first semester at OU and the opportunity to take an introductory course in statistics with the now retired Dr. Larry Miller. Many people in this former mining town do not graduate high school and for them college is an idealistic concept, not a reality. Feelings of being trapped in a stagnant environment permeated my mind, and yet I knew I had to graduate high school; I had to get out. Although most of my friends and family did not understand my ambitions, I knew I wanted to make a difference and used their doubt as motivation to press through. Four days after I graduated high school, I joined the U.S.
